CHATEAU L' ANGELUS 2018

1st Grand Cru Classé A Saint Emilion

Comments from the ChâteauAngélus is certainly one of the Châteaux which has progressed the most over the past thirty years. This meteoric rise earned it, when the Saint-Emilion classification was revised in 1996, the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé B. A daring marriage of grape varieties, including a large proportion of Cabernet Franc, smoothness, purity and rare elegance. This is in a nutshell what defines the style of this legendary castle. In 2012, with the new classification, it joined the emblematic Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone. It thus reaches the very restricted elite of the Saint-Emilion appellation with the Premier Grand Cru Classé A rank. unique design, black and gold screen printing.

“The requirement leads us to always favor excellence. This is why our label is a symbol of dreams and trust » Hubert de Boüard Laforest
History of the ChâteauIt was at the beginning of the 20th century that Maurice de Boüard inherited a wine estate which he enlarged by buying 3 ha of vines located next to Mazerat called Angélus. The property then takes the name of this very ancient land from which the local winegrowers could hear the Angelus ringing simultaneously from the three chapels. The Boüard sons gradually enlarged the castle, from then on called Angélus, by buying the neighboring plots until it reached its current configuration in 1960.

In 1954 the château was classified as a grand cru of Saint-Emilion, the notoriety accompanying this honor enabled it to weather the crisis of the 70s and the revival of the Bordeaux vineyards in the 1980s. Hubert de Boüard Laforest, a descendant of Maurice and a graduate of the he university of oenology in Bordeaux decides to take over the domain. His knowledge of wine as well as his resolutely modern policy have enabled the estate to make enormous progress.

Early barreling after maceration, organic manure, grassing… are among the innovations that allow this château to rise to the highest level. Angélus was also one of the first castles to use sorting tables.

Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, daughter of Hubert, joined the management of the estate in 2012, this same year, the castle reached the supreme rank of Premier grand cru classé A.

Today

Coming from a financial background, Hubert's daughter was able to impose her ideas, starting with rigor and organization. Her modern and ambitious management, coupled with her passion for the vine, transmitted by her father, make her a perfectionist manager who masters the full potential of Angélus: "In front of us, we certainly have competing investors who have enormous financial means , but we have other assets: a family, know-how, a region. By reducing the number of trading houses in her distribution network from 140 to 80, Stéphanie is sorting out and only wants the best for Angélus, the château's reputation takes precedence over everything else. The communication, the image and the international influence of the castle are at the heart of its project. The exceptional terroir from which it benefits and the great vintages of the 2000s will undoubtedly allow it to place Angélus on the roof of the wine world.

CLOS MANOU FRANCOISE AND STEPHANE DIEF 2014

Dense, powerful, complex, with a soft tannic structure; a real Médoc, atypical by the roundness of its merlot.
A great success, 2014 is a winegrower's vintage because it is difficult to work with.

This wine was made from:

52% Cabernet Sauvignon
38% Merlot
7% Petit Verdot
3% Cabernet Franc

Vinification

The vinifications are carried out at low temperature; the extractions are made by reassembly in the concrete vat and only by manual punching in the wooden vat.

Maceration of 20 days during which the lees are resuspended daily in order to bring texture, mellowness, coating to the wine.

The flow:

  • Clos Manou in barrels;
  • Small Manou in vats.

Pressing of the marcs by vertical press cage wood.
All the press wines are separated from the wines of gout waiting for assemblages.

From breeding to bottling

Clos Manou: 80 to 90% of the wines are aged 17 months in new barrels exclusively in wood of French origin, with a medium heat.
10 to 20% of the wines are aged in ovoid vats (concrete eggs) of 7 hectoliters for 12 months in order to maintain freshness and purity. For about 10 weeks, we operate a weekly stirring by rotating the barrels in order to put the lees in suspension and bring to the wine a creamy texture which amplifies the mid-palate.

Little Manou: we operate in the same spirit and with the same philosophy as for our great wine, but to preserve the balance of the wine, a breeding of 12 months is carried out in the old barrels of Clos Manou.

Only two rackings are made during the breeding.

The bottling is done without sticking with a light filtration, always under cover of carbon dioxide to avoid any premature oxidation.

Baron Nathaniel Baron Philippe de Rothschild 2018 75cl

Pauillac Red
Grapes  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc

It is in 1853 that the Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the famous family of patrons and bankers, buys Château Brane Mouton in Pauillac, in the heart of the Medoc. He renamed it immediately Château Mouton Rothschild. From the union of these two magic names will be born a wine of legend.

In 1922, at the age of 20 years, Philippe de Rothschild (1902-1988), great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel, takes over the destinies of Mouton. Its decisions, starting with bottling at castlewill revolutionize Bordeaux's uses.
Over the years, he had the “Grand Chai” built, initiated the collection of artist labels, created the Musée du Vin dans l'Art, and obtained official Premier Cru Classé status for Château Mouton Rothschild. At the same time, he increased the family's wine heritage and in the early 1930s acquired a trading company, which would experience considerable development under its current name of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA

In 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild succeeded her father, Baron Philippe de Rothschild. With the charisma and energy that characterize her, soon effectively supported by her two sons Philippe and Julien, she always shines more light on the glory of Mouton Rothschild, without forgetting of course the other great family Châteaux wines: Armailhac and Clerc Milon in Pauillac, Opus One in California, Almaviva in Chile, Domaine de Baron'Arques in Pays d'Oc.

President of Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA who manages these properties, she assigns the same ambition of excellence, in their category, to a set of wines of brands from the best appellations, created and distributed throughout the world by the Family Company.

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie 2023 Domaine la Bretonnière 75cl

Domaine de la Bretonnière is located 15 km south of Nantes, in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation.

As far as I remember, the CORMERAIS family has always cultivated vines. This passion has been passed down from generation to generation since the 1890s.
It was in 1994 that Bertrand joined his father Joël at the estate.
He maintains and cultivates his vineyard with a view to a very qualitative and environmentally friendly approach.
Bertrand has only one idea: “the quality of wine begins in the vineyard…”

Bordering the Atlantic, the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation is the appellation of the Loire located furthest to the West. It owes its name to the two rivers which cross the vineyard, the “Sèvre Nantaise” and the “Petite Maine”. It is also, with its 11 hectares, the largest single-varietal dry white wine appellation in France. Muscadet constitutes the “Lighthouse” appellation of the Nantes Wine Region.

Details Domain
According to tradition, the Domaine de Montrose takes its name from its geographical location (mount) in relation to the village of Valros (val des roses) and the wild almond trees with pink flowers which border the estate's land. It is on this land steeped in history, as evidenced by the Romanesque tower of Valros, that the Coste family has lived since the end of the 17th century. This "young" estate (it was just a few years old at the time of the 1855 classification) benefits from the most beautiful vineyard in the appellation, in one piece overlooking the river. From 1896 to 2006, it belonged to the Charmolü family, and then became the property of the brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues. This property today represents the model of vineyards due to the practicality of its layout: single vineyard, divided into square plots, separated by wide paths.
Comments
The estate is made up of a single and vast plot adjoining the Gironde to the east. He owes his early success both to the work of men and to the data of nature. This was also particularly generous: a geologically unitary soil composed of very deep red gravel, an ideal orientation, a gentle and regular slope and the proximity of the river which tempers the excesses of the climate. It is then up to men to reveal the full extent of this potential.
Château Montrose wine is one of the flagships of the appellation. A deep, almost opaque color announces a very concentrated nose with multiple nuances. On the palate the wine is particularly firm with a complexity that only time can reveal in all its dimension. This concentrated wine has a very long aging potential. In great years, this wine develops a simply exceptional smoothness and roundness, as evidenced by the 1989 vintage which made Château Montrose a legend.

Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré 2018 75cl

2nd Wine of Léoville Poyferré

Grapes 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot

Château Léoville Poyferré produces elegant, very fine, balanced and complex wines, with intense color and velvety texture, and which have very good aging potential.
Castle
The castle was born from the successive divisions of the Léoville estate which belonged in the 1826th century to Alexandre de Gasq. In 1855 the estate was shared for the first time between Hugh Barton and Jean de Lascases. A few years later the latter gave his daughter in marriage to Baron de Poyferré and brought him as a dowry land taken from the family estate, called Léoville-Poyferré. The new vintage quickly built a solid reputation which earned it recognition in 1866. In 1920 the estate was bought by Mr. Lalande, whose descendants exploited it until XNUMX. It was then sold to the partners of the trading house. , H. Cuvelier et fils, which transformed into a civil company, Domaines Cuvelier. When Didier Cuvelier took charge of the estate, the wine had lost much of its splendor. In around twenty years he has masterfully raised the bar to produce full-bodied, long-lasting wines.
Comments
Despite its fragmentation, the Léoville-Poyferré vineyard benefits from a homogeneity of soil that few in Saint-Julien can claim. The vines here rely on fine gravel and deposits of wind-blown sand. It benefits from excellent exposure which allows the Cabernet Sauvignon, of respectable age, to mature in good conditions. However, this potential has not always been fully exploited. Its revival is due to Didier Cuvelier and Michel Rolland whose collusion is at the origin of very fine vintages. The construction of a new cellar in 1979 allows quality breeding. Buoyed by the success, the administrators are now planning an expansion of the vineyard in the coming years. The wine has a deep color, with a rich substance bursting with ripe fruit and spices. Its very present woodiness and the strength of its tannins
