GIGONDAS LE CLAUX CHATEAU OF SAINT COSME 2019

Very old Grenache planted at a place called “Le Claux”. Whole harvest. Limestone marls from the Miocene, in the Font des Papes alluvial cone. Aged for twelve months: 20% in new barrels - 50% in barrels of one wine - 30% in barrels of two wines. Le Claux is a living testimony to a fundamental part of French wine history: the phylloxera crisis. The vine was replanted in 1870 on a rootstock that has almost disappeared today: the "Gloire de Montpellier". It was one of the very first vines replanted in the Rhone. Producing wines again after such a tragedy must have been "glorious", no doubt... The masculinity of Claux wines is coupled with a complexity that has its sources in the genetic diversity of all these old vine plants. , all different. The depth in the wines of Claux is always amazing, even in the most difficult vintages. In a vintage like 2019, this depth is more like the Mariana Trench than a small pond formed by the storm of August 15. The magic of great vintages is a pleasure, a gift from heaven that all winegrowers of the world share the same way. Because the joy produced by good wine is a human pleasure that is lost in the mists of time. Only the road that goes up to the village of Gigondas separates Claux from Hominis Fides. However, the wines are so different: it is always a good way to understand the meaning of the system of localities imagined by the Cistercian monks in Burgundy. Indeed, before throwing away the ideas of those who preceded us, you have to think, try other ideas many times, then decide by trying to see far ahead. Field of ESPIERS

It is in 1989 that the area of ​​Espiers was born in Vacqueyras, when Philippe Cartoux decided to walk in the footsteps of his grandparents who owned a vineyard in the family since 1879.

The vineyard now covers 9,5 hectares including 3 to Gigondas, 4 en Cotes du Rhone et 2,5 en Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Sablet. The grape variety is largely dominated by the main 3 Rhone grape varieties, namely Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The vines are in struggle and receive no chemical treatment. In general, the gestures are all part of a logic of respect for the soil and the environment, with yields particularly lower than 35 hl / ha.

Harvesting is manual for traditional winemaking and aging in oak barrels. Philippe Cartoux likes to produce robust, gourmet but also refined wines. Proof of the quality of its work, Lavinia boutiques offer its wines.

This wine consists of a single plot of vines in the commune of Gigondas.
The vine is aged 40 and composed of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. The harvest is manual and often the grapes picked are slightly overripe in order to obtain wines more full-bodied.
The vinification is done with a very high temperature (+ 34 ° c) in order to extract a maximum of aromas and color. The harvest is complete to allow a good homogeneity of the grape marc and long pumping over.
This wine is then aged in barrels for about 12 months, then bottled without sticking or filtration.

Very old grenache planted on Miocene limestone sands at a place called "Hominis Fides". Whole harvest. Twelve month aging: 20% in new pieces - 50% in pieces of one wine - 30% in pieces of two and three wines.

The sands of Miocene are, in Gigondas as in the rest of the valley of the Rhone, a geological event posterior to the great uprising of the lace of Montmirail. When the Alps rise, they, like a sheet of paper that we tilt, "open" the Rhone Valley, allowing the sea to engulf itself like a snake finding its way. The sea then covers Lyon, circling the Alpine arc; the Luberon and the Ventoux are only islands, prehistoric fish frolic in the chapel of Saint Cosme and ammonites accumulate in phenomenal quantities. At this time, sands are deposited in our region: we find them in many sites in the Southern Rhone Valley: in the Uchaux massif, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas ... Much later, the small ants that we decide to grow vitis vinifera on these sands, and it turns out that the grenache finds there an amazing field of expression. The old Grenache vine in the Miocene sands is the aromatic finesse, the elegant texture, the depth in the mouth. When the wine ages, it takes notes of Morey Saint Denis pinot: peony and small red berries. What a great idea to have planted at the dawn of the twentieth century, 12 years before the Great War, this vineyard that is always with us.

The Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint-Martin covers 25 hectares only in the municipality of Cairanne. Most of the vineyard is located in the northeast of the town, 200 meters above sea level on steep hills in an area commonly called "the mountain" in the localities of Saint-Martin, Les Douyes and Coustias.

It was in 1692 under the aegis of André Alary that the Alary family settled in Cairanne, as evidenced by the municipal archives. Winegrowers on this terroir from father to son, 10 generations have successively passed on the estate, which has been enlarged over time. Each generation inherited the same love of vines and wine, the same concern for good cultivation and perfect vinification.

Manual sorting of the grapes in the vineyard then in the cellar. De-stemming without crushing and vinification for 18 days under racks for a slow and gentle extraction. Indigenous yeasts. Aging lasts about 12 to 15 months in casks depending on the vintage, then bottling is carried out without fining or filtration.

The nature of the soil is clay and limestone with 15% garrigue type pebbles. The culture is carried out without chemical weedkillers in order to preserve the typicality of the soils. The grape variety is 70% Grenache noir, 20% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah. Aged 25 years on average, the vines are young and have a high density of 5400 vines per hectare, which is 30% more than traditional plantations from the southern Rhône. The yield of the vines is 40 hl. The vinification is carried out in concrete vats and the stalk is kept during the vinification in order to facilitate pumping over and unloading. Aging takes place in concrete vats for 8 months before bottling.
