Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka and father of Japanese whiskey.
In 1967 he was exploring the northern part of the main island to find another ideal site for his second distillery. He came upon a beautiful misty valley surrounded by mountains and at the junction of two clean rivers. After trying the water from one of the rivers, which is today's water source, he was very impressed and immediately decided to build a distillery there. The name of the river was Nikkawa River by coincidence.
Aging places emphasis on sherry casks, bringing great depth to the natural charm of this whisky.
